Syracuse Domestic Violence Defense Lawyer

Personal Attention for Emotional Cases

Domestic violence can occur between spouses, roommates, relatives or significant others. No matter how the situation started, evolved or ended, it is almost certainly an emotional case. When it results in a criminal charge, it is important to tread lightly and not cause additional damage.

Having been a criminal defense attorney since 1993, attorney Jeffrey DeRoberts of DeRoberts Law Firm is an experienced voice and cool head during a potentially emotional time. We have seen cases in which actual violence has occurred, and have also seen cases in which violence was fabricated to gain an advantage in a child custody dispute.

In either case, we will provide a vigorous defense. At our law firm, we represent those with the following domestic issues:

  • Domestic assault
  • Harassment
  • Stalking
  • Orders for protection
  • Criminal contempt of court

To achieve the best possible result for our clients, we use all of the tools available to us, which may include a diversion program for anger management.

Attorney DeRoberts has worked with local prosecutors and judges, and is familiar with how they may or may not negotiate or rule on motions based on similar cases and past rulings. This knowledge is part of the experience that a Syracuse domestic violence defense attorney, since 1993, can bring to your side of the equation.

New York Harassment Defense Lawyer

If there is an existing order for protection, you may only be allowed to see your children under special circumstances. Unless there is an accusation of violence against the children, there is typically a provision for visitation even when an order for protection is in place. No matter what your circumstances are, it is a good idea to keep your cool and keep your distance.

Failure to honor an order for protection could result in a harassment charge or contempt of court. An order for protection is an order initiated by an individual (complainant). If you violate an order for protection by contacting the individual or coming too close, you may be charged with contempt of court.

A felony contempt charge can be more serious. It is possible that you could go to state prison without ever having hurt anyone.
